Protecting the planet for a sustainable future

We strive to be responsible stewards of the environment and consider our impact across all activities.

There is growing awareness about the environmental pressures impacting our planet and the need for more urgent and ambitious action. We are dedicated to doing our part in reducing our impact on the environment and striving for a more sustainable future in partnership with our key stakeholders as outlined in our Global Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability Policy (Global EHS&S Policy).

Our Global EHS&S Policy is implemented by each operational site using a proprietary EHS&S management system with processes to manage the company’s environmental responsibilities (compliance) while improving overall manufacturing operations (sustainability). All sites are internally audited annually across all 16 elements and approximately 1,800 auditable requirements to continuously improve and move beyond compliance to a culture of environmental stewardship. This approach requires that all operational sites have:

  • An effective policy that raises the bar beyond just regulatory compliance and expresses the company commitment to stewardship, the reduction of our environmental impacts and people safety.
  • Formally assigned roles, responsibilities and authorities for regulatory compliance. Based on the PHI Business Conduct Policy, the Plant Manager is ultimately responsible for facility compliance and the expectation (and authority) to develop and implement the environmental compliance programs typically would be department managers such as the EHS Manager.
  • Documented evidence of all key personnel having received appropriate EHS&S training for their role, including completion of all legally and certification required training with a process to identify and address gaps and EHS&S awareness for all new hires.
  • An EHS&S Action Plan or similar document to track tasks, maintain a compliance calendar, monitor progress against goals, and facilitate capital program strategies as they relate to compliance, environmental stewardship and safety. The plan should have a documented, semi-annual review by the Plant Manager or VP of Operations.
  • An audit, at least annually, to assess compliance and EHS&S management system conformance.
  • A commitment to implement corrective actions and continuous EHS&S performance improvement.

We also expect our suppliers to share our high standard of business ethics and we work with those that act in a socially, environmentally and economically responsible manner.

As we continue on this journey, we will report progress on our goals and commitments through our website and annual sustainability report.
